At one point I had two other regular locations for occasional concerts and so many audience members said, "I came because I wanted to hear X but boy do I wish the concerts were all at Music Island. It just doesn't feel the same here".

I worry we will lose people and momentum in the diaspora to come.Kate Mirandahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17740956164355102313noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7165528889627677645.post-35661697479158513902010-10-06T19:50:10.978-07:002010-10-06T19:50:10.978-07:00"It all sounds like leaving me and the Music ..."It all sounds like leaving me and the Music Island audience kind of homeless.... the community that fostered experiences like Music Island will be scattered to the Four Winds. This will mean that our advertising strategy will have to change. You do this already, with Twitter, etc. Perhaps we need to do more of this, and let people know which worlds to go to for events.

Our projects are good, Kate. We've put time and work into them. They don't depend on prims.

As for the Lab, seeing what they've done to people I respect leaves a bad taste in my mouth. If they are trying to sell SL, they're acting like a sleazy car salesman, hoping to paint over the damage they've done and impress a buyer.

Its bad business practice, and its dishonourable behavior.Elliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14404668131193574413noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7165528889627677645.post-90443764403159546492010-10-06T16:18:45.559-07:002010-10-06T16:18:45.559-07:00Well that would presume that I find community as r...Well that would presume that I find community as replaceable and as purchaseable as the Lindens. The audience members who come weekly to share concerts, the musicians who have played many concerts at Music Island, and the Cedar Island community are all as important to me as any RL friends. Packing up and going to another grid is not a very attractive option for me. I think I'd just say, "well that was a waste of 5 years of my life" .... and get on with other things.Kate Mirandahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17740956164355102313noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7165528889627677645.post-26806580417026859422010-10-06T11:49:43.640-07:002010-10-06T11:49:43.640-07:00LL will not listen to you or care about any protes...LL will not listen to you or care about any protests. There is a rumor going around that Microsoft is about to buy SL.
Try Inworldz. You can get much more for your money, and the admin really does care about their customer base. The new grid problems there are being resolved rapidly.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7165528889627677645.post-28454118013922901472010-10-06T11:35:29.894-07:002010-10-06T11:35:29.894-07:00You are right that I took it as a "given"...You are right that I took it as a "given" that educators were already drifting to OpenSim and other grids. That seems to me all the reason that Linden Lab would be wanting to keep this revenue stream as part of Second Life, to say nothing of the spin-off effect of the value-added content contributed by educators and non-profit orgs. Dusan Writer has blogged on the idea of splitting LL into three companies, as you are suggesting. It all sounds like leaving me and the Music Island audience kind of homeless.... the community that fostered experiences like Music Island will be scattered to the Four Winds.Kate Mirandahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17740956164355102313noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7165528889627677645.post-62120289646092774942010-10-06T09:54:40.460-07:002010-10-06T09:54:40.460-07:00The problem with this analysis is that it's no...The problem with this analysis is that it's not taking into account the fact that education and not-for-profit were already flocking to opensim in droves anyway to *save costs*.

Either LL knows that (and I bet they do) and haven't thought this through (I doubt it) because they are just hastening the departure of the NFPs or else they have something else up their sleeves.

I suspect the latter and speculate as to what it could be. They know for damn sure the growth rates of opensim and opensim will continue to grow because it's a FREE OPENSOURCE PLATFORM that ANYONE CAN HOST. My money is that opensim will continue to explode in size.

For example: what if LL splits up into different companies?

They as the creators of the platform could become the IBM of the metaverse i.e. the high end consultants with the most experience.

They could also become the (currently non-existent) central bank of the metaverse enabling grid-grid meta currency transactions.

They could become the ebay of the metaverse through their marketplace site.
One caveat for this is that marketplace sucks and has to be fixed because it's very difficult to find exactly what you're looking for. Try e.g. searching for "short hair female" to see what you get (hint LL I *don't* want LONG HAIR when I type in SHORT HAIR!)

Anyways whatever happens it will be interesting times.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7165528889627677645.post-73665874136701336712010-10-06T09:08:10.716-07:002010-10-06T09:08:10.716-07:00Vint, are you proposing that we just give up and w...Vint, are you proposing that we just give up and watch while Educational and Non-profit content and events disappear from "our" community? Linden Lab may own the infrastructure (apart from our 100 % original creations) BUT we own the community that we have created through our groups, efforts and contacts over what for some us amounts to years of labour.Kate Mirandahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17740956164355102313noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7165528889627677645.post-18761472167795466352010-10-06T08:51:47.648-07:002010-10-06T08:51:47.648-07:00You know I actually forgot that I could.
